What is a Playback Engineer?
A Playback Engineer is a live audio specialist who manages all pre-recorded elements used in a concert—such as backing tracks, click tracks, sound effects, and timecode—ensuring they run reliably and stay perfectly synchronized with the live performers. They design and operate the playback system, maintain redundant backups, and work closely with the Music Director and technical crew to deliver a smooth and consistent performance every show.
This role is especially crucial for concerts with strong visual or cinematic components. In these shows, the music must match the visuals with frame-level precision, making the Playback Engineer essential for keeping the entire production locked together and enhancing the overall emotional impact.
